Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was arrested and charged Tuesday with possession of 1.5 grams of methamphetamine, the Associated Press reports.
The arrest came after officers searched his western North Carolina home and discovered drugs and $100,000 worth of stolen property, according to records from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.
Mayfield, 42, was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR in 2009 for violating the organization’s substance abuse policy.
Detectives told AP that the alleged stolen merchandise – including welding equipment, truck parts and scrap metal – came from local businesses.
Mayfield posted $3,000 bond.
Mayfield's attorney, Daniel Marin, told AP: "Mr. Mayfield has no knowledge of either stolen property or methamphetamine being present on his property and denies the accusation that he was in possession of methamphetamine or any other illegal drug, and he denies any suggestion that he knowingly received or possessed stolen property."
