Major-league baseball player Wilson Ramos, a catcher for the Washington Nationals, was kidnapped Wednesday in his home country of Venezuela, according to reports.

Ramos, 24, was abducted by four armed men from a family home in the town of Santa Ines, 95 miles west of Caracas, the Associated Press reports.

Ramos, who played 113 games for the Nationals as a rookie in 2011, has not been heard from since the abduction, according to Kathe Vilera, a spokeswoman for the Venezuelan League team where he is playing during Major League Baseball's off-season.

"We are still waiting for any news about Wilson Ramos ... all the authorities are working in the case ... We need to be patience and pray," Vilera wrote on her Twitter account on Thursday.

Kidnappers have been known to target the families of wealthy athletes in Venezuela in the hopes of getting a ransom. This is reportedly the first abduction of an MLB player.
