Natalie Wood Case: Robert Wagner Not a Suspect

As authorities reopen the 30-year-old case of Natalie Wood, they plan to reach out to her then-husband – and perhaps the last person to see her alive – actor Robert Wagner.

But when asked at a news conference whether Wagner is a suspect, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. John Corina answered, "No."

Two detectives have been assigned to follow what Corina called new leads. They will also interview possible new witnesses and speak to people who didn't talk to police originally or who have different information than they first provided.

"Already people are coming forwarding and wanting to talk to us," says Corina.

Wagner, 81, issued a statement saying he has not been contacted by sheriff's investigators, but that will likely change.

"Sooner or later we will be contacting his family," says Corina.

The lieutenant offered little information about why the case was being reopened after so many years except to say, "Recently, we have received information which we felt was substantial enough to make us take another look at this case."

Wood, was 43 when she somehow went overboard Nov. 29, 1981, during a rainy night off Catalina Island from a luxury yacht also carrying Wagner, her then-costar in the movie Brainstorm Christopher Walken and the boat's captain, Dennis Davern.

After her body was found floating about a mile away, her death was officially ruled an accidental drowning. But other witnesses have provided new information, including Davern, who says he believes Wagner is responsible for her death.
