Rosie O'Donnell and Michelle Rounds actually got engaged a couple of months ago. But nobody knew until Monday because O'Donnell admits she was uncomfortable officially announcing it on her talk show.
"Michelle said to me a few months ago, when we got engaged, she said, 'How come you didn't say it on your show?' And I was like, 'Honey, I don't know how.' I didn't know how to say it," O'Donnell, 50, revealed Tuesday on OWN's The Rosie Show.
This was a day after the engagement news leaked, when O'Donnell mentioned it during a break in taping and an audience member Tweeted it to the world.
The comedian explained Tuesday that she's never been comfortable talking about her love life in public, because she grew up performing in a time when gay people didn't use their relationships as material.
And she's got a lingering aversion to it. "You don't want to become one of those celebrities that talks about their relationship ad nauseum and makes it into a fairy-tale thing," she says. "And then they go and have an affair with somebody." She added jokingly: "I don't want to say any names."
