Ricky Gervais, start sharpening your tongue – the Golden Globes are off and running.

Among those in the spotlight thanks to Thursday's nominations: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Michelle Williams, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Tilda Swinton, Jodie Foster, Kristen Wiig, Viola Davis, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close.

Also in the running in the leading categories are Modern Family, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey and Homeland, among others.

Mirroring many of the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, which were announced Wednesday, the Globes also recognize movie directors for their work. Those nominated are Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, George Clooney for Ides of March, Martin Scorsese for Hugo, Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist and Alexander Payne The Descendants.

Despite some past controversy for stepping over the line with his satirical remarks, Ricky Gervais will return for a third time as host of the drinks-and-dinner event in the Grand Ballroom of Beverly Hills' Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Golden Globes Awards will be aired live on NBC Sunday, Jan. 15.

Already, Oscar- (for Million Dollar Baby) and Globe- (Driving Miss Daisy) winner Morgan Freeman, 74, has been announced to receive the HFPA's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
