"I am not able to live without my sons, and I'm not able to go on anymore," Powell said in a message obtained by ABC News, recorded 20 minutes before the explosion at his Tacoma, Wash.-area home. "I'm sorry to everyone I've hurt. Goodbye."
Other details about the tragedy are also emerging.
Powell's sons Braden, 5, and Charlie, 7, allegedly suffered "chop wounds" from what appeared to be a hatchet, according to police, reports FoxNews.com. But the official cause of death is believed to be smoke inhalation.
Powell, who was named a "person of interest" in wife Susan's 2009 disappearance, lost custody of their boys in September, and they were put in the hands of Susan's parents Charles and Judy Cox.
