The American Idol
contestant who tumbled off the stage
during her Hollywood Week
audition made a full recovery on Thursday's show.
After singing "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding, Symone Black was talking to the judges when she blacked out and fell. It was a scary moment but she woke up and was able to walk on her own to seek medical attention with her sense of humor intact.
"Does this means I get a yes?" she said on her way out. The doctor's diagnosis: dehydration. The judges' determination: she's still in the game.
While she was away, the rest of the 185 remaining hopefuls faced what Ryan Seacrest
called "the most infamous night in Hollywood Week" – otherwise known as the group round.
The singers had to form groups of four of five, pick a song from a list of 20 and come up with choreography – all in one night. The big twist? Groups had to include contestants from both days of Hollywood Week auditions. So, some already formed groups of bonded contestants were forced to break up and find a stranger to perform with.
Like in past seasons, finding a group was difficult for some contestants like police officer Alisha Bernhardt, who complained that no one wanted to work with her because of her profession. But it was probably more about her unwillingness to sing anything other than Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" or Sugarland's "Stuck Like Glue."
Other groups dealt with infighting. Flushing, N.Y.'s Heejun Han didn't get along with one of his group members, country singer Richie Law, who insisted on certain harmonies and dance steps. Before the night was over, Han was telling camera crews he didn't like cowboys. Not even Dallas Cowboys.
And Amy Brumfield, the contestant who lives in a tent
outside Gatlinburg, Tenn., was feeling sick and running a fever. Seacrest called her "patient zero" because other contestants she came in contact with also fell ill, creating difficulties for their groups.
But by the time the hour was up, no one had performed for the judges. The groups will take the stage next week when Idol
returns on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET).
What about Symone? She returned from the hospital and quickly found a group of girls to sing with – and they should be ones to watch.
