Former Miss USA Rima Fakih pleaded no contest Wednesday to a reduced misdemeanor charge in her DUI case, reaching a deal with prosecutors that should spare her jail time.

Fakih, 26, who appeared in the Detroit-area court with her family behind her, is expected to receive probation when sentenced next month on a charge of driving while visibly impaired.

"You have to pay the price for making mistakes, but you move on and make sure you learn from those mistakes," Fakih said outside the courthouse in Highland Park, Mich., after the hearing.

Fakih was weaving in heavy traffic at 60 mph in a black 2011 Jaguar last December and "appeared disoriented and had very slurred speech" after she was stopped, police say. She allegedly had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit with an uncorked, half-empty bottle of champagne in the car.

In May 2010, Fakih became the first Arab American ever to win the pageant. She competed for Miss Universe later that year but lost.
