Jordis Unga and Jesse Campbell
Lewis Jacobs/NBC (2)
and Christina Aguilera
were each forced to eliminate one
of their own protégés on Monday's episode of The Voice
, and not everyone is happy with their decisions.
Shelton reluctantly chose to cut Jordis Unga, while Aguilera made the unexpected decision to "go with her gut" and eliminate fan favorite Jesse Campbell.
"I'm surprisingly doing all right," Campbell told PEOPLE after he was sent home. "It was kind of a feeling of melancholy. I did not want to go home – definitely. But I believe everything happens for a reason. So whatever reason [Aguilera] had for making this decision, I respect it. I got so much unexpected love from the public. I'm grateful. I look forward to watching development of the other artists."
Campbell added that he doesn't regret picking Aguilera to be his coach.
"I did what I felt God was directing me to do, which was go with her," he said. "I know that this isn't the end. I know that there are no mistakes."
Campbell and his fans aren't the only people optimistic about his future.
"It's sad to see Jesse go," his former teammate Lindsay Pavao told PEOPLE. "He is so strong. But, let's be honest, no one is worried about him doing well."
As for Unga, she told PEOPLE: "I'm okay. I really am okay. I still feel like I'm in a good place."
Before calling her name, Shelton explained that his decision was based on audience voting two weeks ago that had left Unga in the bottom three.
"I'm not mad at him," Unga said of Shelton. "He's so fair. Everybody killed it tonight so I had a feeling. Unless I blew everyone's hair back and did something incredible, I knew that was the way it was going to go."
"I love Jordis so much," Shelton Tweeted
after the show. "It's a shame that all you people bitching and moaning didn't vote her in the first time around.. #getinvolved."
The field will be narrowed further on Tuesday's episode, after audience votes are tallied.
