Family and Friends Mourn Mary Kennedy
The funeral for Mary Kennedy, the wife of Robert Kennedy Jr., was held Saturday in Bedford, N.Y. Kennedy died at age 52 on Wednesday of asphyxiation from hanging at her home in Mount Kisco, N.Y.
In addition to the couple's children, others in attendance included Caroline Kennedy, Maria Shriver, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, John McEnroe and actress Glenn Close.
The funeral followed a family struggle over burial rights pitting Kennedy Jr., the son of former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, against Mary Kennedy's siblings.
Married since 1994, Robert and Mary had been separated since 2010 but were not legally divorced. Mary's body was released after her estranged husband obtained a court order directing the Westchester County medical examiner to turn over the body to the Clark Associates Funeral Home, reported ABCNews.com.
The Kennedys planned to bury her near the family's compound in Hyannisport, Mass., on Cape Cod, according to the Associated Press.
"The first task is for Mary's family to take her to her final resting place, with the dignity and love she deserves," her siblings wrote in a statement released on Friday.
"She was generous, thoughtful, with a refined aesthetic, genius organizational abilities, boundless energy, physical stamina, and a natural elegance. She laughed a lot. Her enthusiasms were deep. She loved to connect with people, with no self-interest, and with great intelligence," the statement read.
The statement came after Kennedy Jr. opened up to The New York Times about his wife's battle with depression.
"A lot of times, I don't know how she made it through the day," he told the Times. "She was in a lot of agony for a lot of her life."
