winner Phillip Phillips has finally had the surgery he's needed since he started the singing competition earlier this year.
The Georgia-bred heartthrob, 21, was under the knife for six and a half hours yesterday, according to TMZ
, to remove kidney stones that were too large to pass.
"Surgery went well," his rep tells PEOPLE. "He's resting."
Phillips, who beat out runner-up
Jessica Sanchez in a star-studded
and emotional finale
last month, suffered throughout the competition, getting eight operations
during the season, according to his father, also Phillip Phillips, who said he was merely "hitting 50 percent" during his performances on the show.
According to his rep, the most recent surgery is expected to get him healthy in time for the upcoming Idols Live Tour, which kicks off July 6 in Detroit.
And it should be a good show: "[America's] just seen a glimpse of what Phillip can do," his father told PEOPLE. "We can't wait to get him well and 100 percent and really see how he can perform."
