Primetime's newest singing competition, ABC's Duets, premiered Thursday with the show's four mentors – Clarkson", John Legend, Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke – taking the stage to perform one of their own songs with each of their two protégés.
Clarkson quickly found herself the underdog. The former American Idol winner's teammates, Jordan Meredith and Jason Farol, claimed the bottom two spots based on scores from the other coaches after their renditions of Clarkson's "Stronger" and "Breaking Your Own Heart," respectively.
One of Nettles's contestants, J Rome, took the top spot after his duet with Nettles on Sugarland's "Tonight."
Nettles was equally impressed with her other mentee, John Glosson.
"So proud of my partners and their performances," she Tweeted during the show. "Just saw @JohnDuets performing and am so excited! Can't wait for next week!"
Rounding out the eight contestants are Legend's teammates, Johnny Gray and Bridget Carrington; and Thicke's choices, Alexis Foster and Olivia Chisholm.
