Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes's Shocking Split: Inside PEOPLE's Cover Story
It's been a dramatic week for Tom Cruise. His wife Katie Holmes filed for divorce on Friday and he turned 50 Tuesday – alone on a flight from Iceland to California. Did Cruise know it was coming?
"Most certainly, it came as a surprise," says PEOPLE Assistant Managing Editor JD Heyman, of this week's cover subject. "Less than a month ago, [he] told PEOPLE that he was happily married and was very much looking forward to spending his 50th birthday with his wife and his daughter in Iceland, where he's filming the movie, Oblivion."
The divorce filing "was a long time coming" for Holmes, 33, who, Heyman explains, is "mostly concerned about the education and care of her daughter Suri."
