The country singer suffered cuts and bruises when he crashed his car Tuesday night, and was arrested shortly before midnight on suspicion of driving while intoxicated near Tioga, Texas, 60 miles north of Dallas.
Sheriff's troopers responding to a 911 call reporting a man was lying in the roadway. There they found a naked Travis, who had a "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" on Travis's breath, according to the Grayson County Sheriff's Office.
"While Travis was being transported, [he] made threats to shoot and kill the troopers working the case," says the sheriff's office in a statement.
The singer refused to give a blood or breath test for alcohol, so blood was drawn under a search warrant.
Travis, 53, was being held on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated and a felony of retaliation. He reportedly was later released after posting $21,500 bail and issued paper clothing.
A rep for the singer did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
This marks another run-in with the law for Travis, who was arrested in February on a charge of public intoxication after police found him smelling of alcohol and carrying an open bottle of wine in front of a church.
The Dallas/Fort Worth-area resident told police at the time he'd just gotten in a fight with his girlfriend – he split from his wife of 19 years in 2010 – and he later apologized for his drunken behavior.
