Food Network star Marc Summers is grateful he's in one piece and recovering quickly after being in a scary car accident
Summers, 60, was riding in a cab in Philadelphia after returning from shooting an episode of Restaurant Impossible
, during a "torrential downpour" when "the cab lost control, hydroplaned," he tells PEOPLE.
The crash caused the Unwrapped
host to hit the partition between the front and back seats of the cab. "Everything on the left side [of my face] from my eye socket down was just wiped out," he tells PEOPLE. "My eye socket got all swollen. I'm having trouble seeing completely out of the left eye ... There's lots of titanium and screws in my face."
"I was pretty lucky that I didn't have brain damage," Summers adds.
Describing the scene of the accident, Summers says he can't remember the exact moment of impact, but recalls what led up to it and what happened later.
"I knew when [the driver] lost control that I was in trouble. I was on the phone with my supervising producer and I said, 'Oh my God, we're going to crash!' " he recalls. "Next thing I knew, I woke up and had blood all over me."
Summers's wife, son and daughter-in-law jumped on a red-eye to see him before he went into four hours of surgery with a plastic surgeon.
Though the accident caused a lot of damage to his face and Summers is in pain, his surgeon told him, "Everything went back into place," the host says. "In a few weeks, the swelling will go down and no one will ever know ... I'll be a new guy."
