After announcing in July she would take medical leave, Robin Roberts has set the date.

Friday, Aug. 31, will be the Good Morning America anchor's last day on-air before she takes an extended medical leave for myelodysplastic syndrome (commonly called "MDS").

Beginning on Monday, Sept. 3, Roberts, 51, will start the preparations to undergo a bone-marrow transplant. Roberts's sister, Sally, will act as the bone marrow donor.

During the days leading to Roberts's farewell, Good Morning America will share the stories of others battling MDS.

"It's rare to have MDS and mine was because of complications from the breast cancer treatment," Roberts, who fought breast cancer five years ago, says.

"It's been quite a journey," she adds.

Starting Thursday, Roberts's team and doctors will post updates on her recovery. Viewers will also be able to leave personal messages for her.

"I am very blessed. 40% of Americans can't even take a sick day and here, I know that I'm going to have a job when I come back, " she says.
