Fifty Shades of Grey author E L James is a far cry from the sultry characters she's created in her best-selling novels.

For a woman whose trilogy introduced the controversial BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism) lifestyle to much of the nation, the married mother of two is surprisingly mum. When asked about the sexual relationship that made the Fifty Shades series bedroom fodder for many at Monday's "Fifty Shades of Grey: The Classical Album" event at Manhattan's Soho House, James politely declined.

"I don't want to comment on that," she told Alicia Quarles of E! News.

But when pressed about the film adaption currently in the works, the author had plenty to say.

"All this has been a huge shock to me," she said. "When I got the first email asking about the film rights, I nearly fell off my chair; it was a huge Hollywood agency!"

As fans of the series are buzzing with suggestions for who should bring characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey to life on the big screen, James is careful not to endorse any particular actor.

"It gets messy," she said. "You might end up with somebody else [other than who I suggested]."

While the trilogy is expected to translate into a blockbuster film franchise, James insists Hollywood was never her "intention" and that the wild reception the series has received is still shocking to her. ("It's all noise," she said.)

Her favorite part of her newfound celebrity? Meeting her fans.

"The books are my fantasy. I wrote them for me, really, and the wonderful thing about doing this is they seem to be other peoples' fantasies, so I'm not such a pervert," she said with a laugh.
