Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds pulled off a stunning, intimate wedding in South Carolina on Sept. 9 – but the couple weren't legally wed until Sept. 14, according to paperwork filed at the marriage license division at the probate court in Charleston, S.C.
Documents show that Reynolds, 35, and Lively, 25, applied for a marriage license on Thursday, Sept. 13, and actually got married the following day.
The law mandates that there be a 24-hour waiting period between filing an application for a marriage license and the time that the license can be issued. A couple is also required to apply for the license in person. The cost of a marriage license: $70.
Ahead of their wedding ceremony, Lively and Reynolds went to great lengths to keep the event a secret, even concealing details from key players such as the cake baker.
"For us, we were simply working for a client like we always do," a rep for the Alexandria, Va.-based cake decorator Maggie Austin Cake told PEOPLE. "We are surprised and delighted that we were able to work with them."
Nearly everyone involved in the nuptials was asked to sign non-disclosure agreements – including the parents of the children's choir from the local First Baptist Church, who performed during the ceremony – and cell phones were confiscated from guests before being returned after the event.
