Keith Urban seems like a pretty chill dude – and he had to be on Tuesday, when his fellow American Idol judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey had a heated exchange on set in Charlotte, N.C.

"I was the UN," he joked to Extra on Wednesday at the New York Film Festival premiere of Paperboy, which stars his wife, Nicole Kidman.

The country singer, 44, was "Switzerland" during the incident, Kidman added with a laugh.

Urban put a positive spin on what was clearly an intense confrontation, saying it's good to have people who care deeply about what they're working on.

"I love it, I gotta say," he said. "I love working with passionate people. I love artists. Everyone just sort of expressing themselves. It's a very alive and very invigorating work environment. A lot of passion."

He added jokingly: "Randy's the craziest – so, you know, unpredictable."

A friend of Carey's told PEOPLE that she's "not going to let this faze her." And Idol host Ryan Seacrest has said there are bound to be disagreements between the judges, who are "very different individuals ... with different perspective and different opinions."
