Actress and singer Taryn Manning was arrested Thursday morning and charged with assault after a fight with her makeup artist in her New York City hotel room.

Manning, 33, allegedly punched and kicked the woman in an early morning fight, which occurred at the Dream Downtown Hotel in the city's Chelsea neighborhood, the same place where Lindsay Lohan was involved in an automobile accident with a pedestrian recently, TMZ.com reports.

According to Manning's defense attorney Joe Tacopina, the whole incident was blown out of proportion.

Manning and her makeup artist, Holly Hartman, are longtime friends, who even live together in Los Angeles. "They'd been together every waking minute and they got on each other's nerves and had a little incident," Tacopina tells PEOPLE. "It was a minor physical incident."

Manning was arraigned on Friday and released on bail. "I expect it to be resolved based on conversation I had with [Holly Hartman]," Tacopina said, adding that the makeup artist does not intend to press charges.

The District Attorney will decide later whether or not to drop the charges.

Manning, who starred in Hustle and Flow, 8 Mile and Crazy/Beautiful, has also appeared on television, including Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Burn Notice. She is also involved in music, forming the band Boomkat with her brother Kellin. She has released several music videos, including her most recent dance single Send Me Your Love in August.
