Cunningham, 70, had been working as a security guard when he went to investigate a gunshot at an apartment complex building, reports Memphis's Commercial Appeal. Also found dead was an unidentified 16-year-old boy, says the newspaper.
"He'd take care of the old people and the Spanish kids," said Byny Garcia, who lives across from where the shooting took place and described the violence in the neighborhood as common.
Of Cunningham, he said, "He was a good person. We don't feel good at this moment."
Blake Baker Cunningham Jr. first gained attention in 1965, with Ronnie and the Daytonas (later known as the Hombres), and had been with rocker Lewis's band since 1997, reports the Associated Press.
In 2003, Cunningham released a solo album, Hangin'. Earlier in this career, he also worked as a sound engineer at the legendary Sounds of Memphis Studios.
According to Commercial Appeal, he was a versatile talent whose career spanned half a century, "as a musician, frontman, songwriter, session player, engineer and producer."
As of yet, no further details about the shooting incident are available.
