But the real business of the night was to announce the top 12 and to send home one act. The results, for the first time, were based on viewers' votes. Another first: at the end of the show, hosts Mario Lopez and Khloé Kardashian announced how the contestants ranked in terms of who earned the most and least number of votes. And you might be surprised.

The following singers were the first to be declared safe (in no particular order): Arin Ray, Paige Thomas, Diamond White, Vino Alan, Jennel Garcia, Emblem3, Carly Rose Sonenclar, Tate Stevens, Beatrice Miller, Lyric 145 and Fifth Harmony.
That means Team Demi's CeCe Frey and L.A. Reid's Jason Brock would have to sing for survival. Frey performed "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" by Cher from the movie Burlesque, while Brock performed "Total Eclipse of the Heart."
Both did well, and the judges were split. Predictably, Demi voted to send home Brock, and L.A. wanted to get rid of Frey. Surprisingly, Britney sided with L.A., and Simon sided with Demi.
In the case of a tie, the act that got the lowest number of votes would be sent home. That contestant was Jason Brock.
"I did it for the gays and Japan," he said with a laugh. "I'm really happy to have been here."
"Every time he sings, he sings from his heart," his mentor L.A. said. "He's very entertaining and I really loved working with you. It really makes me sad to see you go."
And then with mere minutes left in the hour-long broadcast, Khloé and Mario revealed the full results of America's vote (in a very particular order). Here's the list, without Frey, who landed in 12th place:
11. Arin Ray
10. Beatrice Miller
9. Lyric 145
8. Paige Thomas
7. Jennel Garcia
5. Fifth Harmony
4. Diamond White
3. Vino Alan
2. Carly Rose Sonenclar
