Globe Nominee Sofia Vergara: You Can't Control Wardrobe Malfunctions

Following a serious wardrobe malfunction that left the Modern Family star exposed at the Emmys last year, you might expect her to come up with a way to avoid a similar situation at Sunday's Golden Globes. Well, you'd be wrong.
"It's very easy [for a dress to rip] because you get out of the car, you go up, you try to go to the restroom. When you're on the red carpet, a lot of people step on your dress and pull it," Vergara, 40, told PEOPLE Friday. "After awhile, that's what causes the stitches to get loose because usually you have those long gowns. You can never really control it, but you just hope for the best."
Fashion emergencies aside, the best supporting actress nominee calls Hollywood's awards season "a fun time."
"It's a celebrating time," she added. "I don't see any stress in it, because for me, the award is just going to the awards show. I never expected in my life that I was going to be part of a show like Modern Family and be nominated for anything. I'm very new to acting, so for me, it's a party."
Win or lose, Vergara and the cast of her show, which is also nominated, plan to enjoy the glamorous night as a cast.
"We eat together while getting dressed," she says. "We have drinks. We make it a nice day. I think [our cast's chemistry] is luck. We honestly like each other. We don't have any competition."
Even if Vergara doesn't take home an award, she will steal the spotlight with a new Diet Pepsi commercial, part of her "Love Every Sip" campaign, which will air for the first time during one of the show's commercial breaks.
Going into the big night, she feels "a lot more calm" than she has in years past.
"It was more nerve-racking because we didn't know what was going on," she explains. "Now we know the process of getting ready and prepared – the dress, the jewelry. I know now more who the designers are that fit me right. It's getting easier and easier.
The 70th Golden Globe Awards will air live Sunday, Jan. 13, on NBC at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
