The issue of gun violence is an extremely public and political one. But for many, including Jewel, it's also deeply personal.

The singer, 38, has written a short piece on the topic for the 1simplechange website in which she reveals how she plans to help her son Kase deal with the underlying trouble at the root of so many shootings – unchecked anger.

"Anger shootings," she writes, often happen because the shooter never learned to deal with emotional problems in non-violent ways.

"I hope to help teach my son to deal with frustration, and learn how to problem-solve in healthy ways, so that by the time he's older and not under my wing, he will have some skills," she writes. "Then when he gets frustrated or when something arises that is confusing for him, he'll find ways of problem-solving and working through it."

Kase, the singer's son with husband Ty Murray, is 20 months old.

1simplechange is an online initiative started by PEOPLE's sister Time Inc. magazines All You, Essence, Health and Real Simple in response to the Newtown, Conn., school shootings in December. The project asks people to share their "one simple change" to keep America's children safe.

Previous contributors have included actress Amanda Peet, Boston mayor Thomas M. Menino, and Sybrina Fulton, mother of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
