An Italian court is expected to rule Monday whether American Amanda Knox will face a retrial in the murder case of her roommate, British student Meredith Kercher.

Knox, now 25, along with her Italian ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, was acquitted on appeal of Kercher's murder in October 2011 after an 11-month trial that was watched around the world. Knox, who now lives in Seattle, and who long professed her innocence in the gruesome 2007 stabbing death, spent four years in jail as she waited to go to trial.

A verdict in Knox's first trial, where she received a 26-year sentence, was thrown out.

Italy's Supreme Court heard arguments in the case in Rome on Monday. If Knox was ordered to a retrial, she would not have to appear in Italy as defendants there are not required to be in court.

Italian prosecutors, who are asking the court to toss the acquittals, claim that Kercher, 21, was killed by Knox and Sollecito, 29, who they claim used drugs before the slaying and sexually assaulted Kercher. Knox and Sollecito, who were dating at the time, admitted to smoking marijuana the evening when she died but said they played no role in her stabbing death.

Kercher, an exchange student, was found dead in a pool of blood with her throat slashed in her apartment, which she shared with Knox in the town of Perugia. Prosecutors claimed she was killed in a kinky sex game gone wrong, fueling headlines and interest in the case.

Rudy Guede, a drifter from the African nation of Ivory Coast, is serving a 16-year sentence in the murder.

Both Sollecito and Knox penned memoirs about their experience.
