They weren't monkeying around!

German customs officials seized a capuchin monkey from Justin Bieber last Thursday after the singer apparently attempted to bring it into the country without official permission.

"Justin Bieber brought his monkey to Germany, but had no official paperwork with him," Thomas Meister, spokesman for the customs office at the Franz Josef Strauss Airport in Munich, tells PEOPLE. "We were forced to confiscate the animal."

When customs in Munich found the monkey had been brought into the country on Bieber's private plane, they detained the star and quarantined the monkey in their facilities at the airport.

Bieber will reportedly be charged with a fine, and he will have to pay the costs of the quarantine.

A rep for the singer had no comment.

Bieber, who's currently in the midst of his very eventful Believe tour in Europe, is set to perform in Austria on Saturday night, and then continue on for a series of shows in Germany. The European leg of the tour is expected to wind down at the end of April.

In between his concerts, he flew from Poland (where he went shirtless through the airport) to Los Angeles where he briefly reunited with his ex Selena Gomez at her home on Wednesday.
