Carrie Underwood hasn't seen her NHL star husband Mike Fisher for a week, her long tour schedule and his hockey season keeping the busy couple apart.

But she remains focused on staying tight. "You just have to make that your number one priority," Underwood, 30, who graces PEOPLE's current cover, said backstage at American Idol Thursday night.

"You see each other when you can and you talk to each other as much as you can," the singer told PEOPLE. "You just have to commit and make it work."

In PEOPLE's cover story, Underwood said her marriage comes first and that she would quit her music career "if Mike ever told me he needed me to quit." But Underwood says some people interpreted her remark as a sign she might soon slow down – and wants to clarify that she isn't retiring any time soon.

"I feel like everyone's afraid he's going to make me quit my job and that's not quite what we were saying!" said Underwood, who added in the cover story that her husband "completely supports me in [my career], as I do him."

On the issue of starting a family, timing is a concern but Underwood said she is content to simply allow her life to move with the flow.

"There's always something new to look forward to and something new to plan," Underwood said. "[Having a baby] will just happen when it happens."
