Former New England Patriot Joe Andruzzi was in the right place to help Monday – just steps from the finish line of the Boston Marathon where two explosions killed three people.

The offensive lineman and three-time Super Bowl player is also a cancer survivor and runs a charitable foundation to assist cancer patients and support pediatric brain cancer research.

Andruzzi organizes a team of runners every year at the Boston Marathon as part of their fundraising efforts, which is why he and his wife Jen were there to greet them as they completed their 26.2 mile trek.

The Patriots retweeted a photo of Andruzzi carrying a woman shortly after chaos erupted, and though he declined to be interviewed about his experience, he released a statement through the PR firm that works with his foundation. It said:

"Marathon Monday should be about uplifting stories, personal challenges and fundraising milestones, but [Monday]'s bombings irrevocably changed that. While I appreciate the interest in hearing our perspective on [Monday]'s horrific events, the spotlight should remain firmly on the countless individuals – first responders, medics, EMTs, runners who crossed the finish line and kept on running straight to give blood – and the countless civilians who did whatever they could to save lives. They were the true heroes. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this senseless tragedy."
