"I'm hoping to meet some on my talk show," McCarthy, 40, says of her new, self-titled VH1 gig. "I keep telling my producers to books some cute, heterosexual single men."
The idea to merge work and dating came from a friend and fellow talk show host, Chelsea Handler. "She told me book who you want to date," the former Playboy cover girl told PEOPLE at a fundraiser for Generation Rescue, her autism non-profit organization, at Studio Paris in Chicago on Tuesday.
But so far, the producers haven't come through. "Time and time again we're not getting them," said McCarthy, who arrived at the event in a black and white dress, gold-studded high-heel sandals and pink streaks in her blonde hair.
McCarthy's date for the night was her son Evan, 10, whose autism diagnosis at age 2 sparked her involvement in the cause. She says he has now recovered from the disorder.
With her busy life as mom to Evan and talk show host, McCarthy – who lives in Chicago and commutes to New York to tape her show – says she has little time to date.
"Any days off I'm with my son, so I feel I really want to put myself on hold," she said, adding that she may have more time when Evan "wants his girlfriends more than me."
Though she admits a man in her life would be nice: "I miss the romance," she said. "I miss the cuddling."
