When PEOPLE sat down with New Jersey's chief executive and his wife of 27 years, Mary Pat, at their home on May 18, Mrs. Christie giggled over a question about her husband's most recent romantic treat.
"You can tell her. Go on," the Governor urged her.
For Mother's Day, Mary Pat said, Gov. Christie squired her up to New York City without telling her the reason.
"He actually got a hotel room and we ordered room service for dinner. And we weren't disturbed," she said. "It was a really great hotel with good food and it as really romantic and we left at 11 o'clock. We didn't stay over, which, I think, was the coolest thing about it."
(Given the surprise nature of the date, she didn't know to arrange a babysitter and, besides, they had Mass and Mother's Day brunch the next morning.)
There was a room-service dinner and, in an adjoining room, a massage for his wife, Christie boasted, adding with a chuckle, "And they didn't rent hourly, which was the awful part of it!"
