Theroux and Campbell are longtime New York friends who share a love of tattoos and motorcycles (they once formed a motorcycle gang called Die Fast), according to the New York Times. Theroux even wrote an essay in Campbell's book, If You Don't Belong, Don't Be Long.

Campbell chose a Marc Jacobs suit for his wedding but Jacobs wears Campbell's designs every day. Jacobs's tattoos – including the one of his pet bull terriers, a couch on his hip and the word "Shameless" on his chest – were all inked by Campbell. The tattoo artist recently told The Hollywood Reporter of his good friend: "He's brilliant. So inspiring. His confidence in me, and his encouragement, has been really significant in just figuring out a reason to get out of bed each morning."
