Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip has been admitted to a London hospital for an exploratory operation, Buckingham Palace announced Thursday.

In a brief statement, the Palace said: "His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to the London Clinic for an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations. He is expected to stay in hospital for up to two weeks."

The statement added, "Further updates will be issued when appropriate."

After pulling out of an event Monday night because of illness, Philip, who turns 92 on June 10, later attended Tuesday morning's service to mark the 60th anniversary of the queen's coronation, along with Elizabeth, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.
