After not appearing on last season of Dancing with the Stars
, ballroom's bad boy Maksim Chmerkovskiy may return for the competition's upcoming new season.
"Maks is part of the family," ABC's president of entertainment Paul Lee told Today.com
Sunday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour.
"He may well be back. We love having him be part of the show."
The popular yet fiery pro – known as much for his sexy dancing as for butting heads with the judges – is currently performing
in Luis Bravo’s show, Forever Tango
, at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre through Aug. 11 with former fiancée and DWTS
costar Karina Smirnoff.
The pair, who appeared on Broadway previously in Burn the Floor
, became engaged New Year's Day 2009 in Las Vegas before enduring a very public breakup
Chmerkovskiy's return may not be the only plot twist for the popular show. ABC revealed in May that it was cutting the Tuesday results show and focusing on the two-hour Monday show. Lee did not provide any more details about the changes but hinted the elimination may occur at the end of each show.
Season 17 of Dancing with the Stars
kicks off Sept. 16 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
