Lindsay Lohan in The Canyons
wasn't at the Los Angeles premiere of her racy film The Canyons
on Tuesday night, but cast members had plenty to say about the star and her recovery.
"She's decided not to be here because she's worried coming out of rehab [and] hanging out in L.A. for the weekend," the film's director Paul Schrader told the audience in a speech before the movie was shown.
Explaining Lohan's history with alcohol, Schrader told reporters, "She has been on this Adderall for about five years. It makes her speedy so she has to cut that with vodka. Now you're dealing with a speedball."
Although Schrader told PEOPLE, "People do want to hire her," he acknowledges that the troubled actress
, 27, lives in a "crisis atmosphere," adding, "Everything's a crisis. And when it isn't a crisis, she finds a way to make it one."
As for her recovery since finishing 90-day treatment in July
in two different centers, "A lot of it's up to her," Schrader said. "If she can create a reputation of reliability, and that's her number one problem, she will have a career because people do … like her."
Producer Braxton Pope recently visited Lohan at the Betty Ford Center.
"We talk all the time and I think she's doing quite well," he told reporters. "She's very serious about her career and future work."
Nolan Funk, who plays Lohan's ex-boyfriend and lover in the film, enjoyed working with the actress.
"It was great," he said. "We ended up having great chemistry. It was a very positive working relationship."
When asked about the former Mean Girls
star's recovery, he said, "She seems really focused right now. I can't predict anything, but as of right now, I think she's doing amazing. I'm really happy for her."
