Leah Remini, who left the Church of Scientology last month
, took her concerns about the wife of the controversial religion's leader to the police.
A source confirms to PEOPLE that Remini filed a missing persons report for the wife of David Miscavige.
The wife of the Scientology leader has reportedly not been seen in public in six years. But cops say Remini's claim is "unfounded" and they reportedly saw her themselves
"The LAPD has classified the report as unfounded, indicating that Shelly is not missing," Detective Gus Villanueva said late Thursday.
A statement from Media Relations, Church of Scientology International, released to PEOPLE late Thursday, said: "The Los Angeles Police Department has already stated that the case is closed and that the report filed by Leah Remini was unfounded.
"This ill-advised, ludicrous self-promotion and the media inquiries it generated caused an inexcusable distraction for the LAPD in an era when the time and resources of its officers are stretched thin each day. Creating this unnecessary burden for law enforcement was even more irresponsible given the entire episode was nothing more than a publicity stunt for Ms. Remini, cooked up with unemployed, anti-religious zealots who blog on the fringe of the Internet. Sadly, rather than move on with her life and career, Ms. Remini has aligned herself with a handful of untrustworthy, lunatic tabloid sources who obsessively harass the Church to advance their selfish agendas."
Church officials denied that Miscavige was ever missing, but the King of Queens
star, 43, was reportedly punished after she asked the Scientology leader why his spouse wasn't at the wedding of Katie Holmes
and prominent church member Tom Cruise
Remini has not revealed why she split from the church, but told PEOPLE
at the end of July that "no one is going to tell me how I need to think, no one is going to tell me who I can, and cannot, talk to."
The Hollywood Reporter
was first to report
the news of the police report.
