San Diego Sheriff William D. Gore said Hannah's father was "elated" his daughter was found alive. FBI agents shot and killed DiMaggio, reports CNN.
"It was the worst-case scenario, but at the same time, we're very grateful Hannah is alive," Cathy Griffin, a DiMaggio family spokeswoman, told PEOPLE on Saturday night.
Griffin said the family isn't sure what to make of the crimes DiMaggio allegedly committed.
"It’s all speculative as to what actually happened, and we won't know any of this until Hannah can discuss this with the authorities," Griffin said.
In Lakeside, Calif., where Hannah lived with her family, her friends expressed relief and joy.
"Everyone's excited," Marissa Chavez, 15, told PEOPLE. "A bunch of people cried" when they got the news. "We're just real excited that she's back and safe."
Federal and local law enforcement spent Saturday combing through Idaho's rugged Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in search of Hannah and her suspected kidnapper, 40-year-old James Lee DiMaggio.
DiMaggio is suspected of killing Hannah's mother, 44-year-old Christina Anderson, and her 8-year-old brother Ethan Anderson, whose bodies were found Sunday night in DiMaggio's burning house in California near the Mexico border.

At a San Diego news conference Saturday night, an FBI spokesperson said: "During an arrest attempt at the north end of Morehead Lake in Idaho, suspect James Lee DiMaggio was shot and killed by an FBI tactical agent assigned to an FBI headquarters unit. Hannah Anderson was located with DiMaggio, appears to be well and was transported to a hospital in Idaho."
The spokesperson also said: "Brett Anderson, Hannah's father, has been alerted and he is elated. Plans are being made now for him to reunited with his daughter, hopefully tomorrow morning."
As for the outcome, "Obviously, we would have liked Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in a court of law, but that's not going to be the case.
"Hannah didn't have any injuries that I know of. She will be completely evaluated. There's obviously still some investigation to be done – we'll be talking to Hannah to get more details of what happened and wrapping up our investigation."
