The three-time Oscar nominee is set to make her Broadway debut in the Roundabout Theater Company's revival of Cabaret
, opening in April, The New York Times
Williams, 32, will play the lead role of Sally Bowles, made famous by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film, for which Minnelli won the Oscar.
The other major role, that of the M.C., will be played by Alan Cumming – the same role that won him a Tony Award in the Roundabout's 1998 revival of the 1966 landmark musical, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.
Also reuniting for this production are director Sam Mendes and co-director and choreographer Rob Marshall, who staged the 1998 show as well. Since then, the two have gone on to become major film directors: Marshall, with the 2002 Oscar-winning Best Picture Chicago
, and Mendes, with the latest 007, Skyfall
, among other movies.
Williams is known mostly for her films but has done stage work, including a starring role off-Broadway in the Tracy Letts play Killer Joe
