seems to be taking fashion cues from her husband.
"The morning after [PEOPLE's Best Dressed]
issue was announced, I made sure to come to work in sweats," the Scandal
star, 36, told PEOPLE at this week's Saks Fifth Avenue celebration for the show's season 3 premiere.
But they weren't just any old sweats. The show's costume designer Lyn Paolo said the happy newlywed came to set showing some home team spirit.
"She came in her husband [Nnamdi Asomugha]'s giant football player sweatshirt and said 'Look, I'm the best dressed!' It was pretty funny."
Added castmate Guillermo Diaz, "She comes in her comfy clothes, you know, but in an hour, she's looking totally, completely glamazon."
And glam she was at the event, which celebrated the return of her hit show with Scandal
-styled mannequins in the Manhattan flagship Saks store windows.
Asked if it were to come down to a fashion face-off between Washington and her character, Olivia Pope, "Kerry would win. She pushes boundaries and is brave and bold," said the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes. "But I think Olivia lives within the Washington parameters of fashion."
As for how the actress plays such a troubled character on-screen, when her real life is full of newlywed bliss, "She knows how to go to work and deliver," said Diaz, "Then step away from it, shake it off and let it go, and go back home to her hubby."
returns this season as Pope's love interest. Being married himself, he described his love scenes with Washington as "enjoyably awkward."
"My wife watched our first love scene and said, 'Bring some of that home!' I'm sure [Kerry's husband] sees them. I haven't heard he's coming to get me or anything, which would be terrifying because he's a professional athlete," said Foley.
Washington, who wed 49er cornerback Asomugha in a secret ceremony
this summer, is still mum on details about married life.
When asked how she pulled off the surprise nuptials, she joked with reporters, saying, "If I told you, I'd have to kill you."
