It was an emotional night on Monday's Dancing with the Stars.

Focusing on the theme of "most memorable year," dances paid tribute to a variety of topics including health struggles, motherhood and finding love.

But despite the passionate performances, three pairs were in jeopardy at the end of the night: Christina Milian and Mark Ballas, Leah Remini and Tony Dovolani, and Elizabeth Berkley and Val Chmerkovskiy.

On the fifth week of competition, Milian and Ballas were sent packing, despite earning the first 10 of the evening.

"Shock in the ballroom," Brooke Burke said.

"It's a true shock, I wasn't expecting that, but we had I think the best performance tonight that we had thus far," Milian said of her 28-point cha cha that Len Goodman, in awarding a perfect 10, called "fantastic!"

"I'm just very proud of Christina, we worked really hard, she was great tonight. We went out with a bang," said Ballas.

Although a surprise, there was a strong clue that this could have happened. The show opened with host Tom Bergeron saying that based on last week's audience voting "one of the women would be going home tonight."

Only the judges' scoring could have saved Milian; in the end, even the impressive two nines to go with the 10 weren't enough.

"I've made some great memories, great friends here, everybody's been fantastic," said Milian, whose dance was inspired by her divorce and the birth of her daughter, both in the same year – 2010. "It's been something that I've learned a lot about myself just being here … you know if you take a challenge and you take a great risk, you become a better person."
