Sometimes people just have a bad day. And according to Donald Glover, that's what's to blame for his recent online rant.
On Monday, the former Community
actor turned musician posted a series of troubling posts
on Instagram. "I feel like I'm letting everyone down. I'm afraid people hate who I really am. I'm afraid I hate who I really am," he wrote. "I've been sick this year. This is the first time I've felt helpless."
But the actor now says he was merely venting. "That night, we had a show, and then afterwards, I had this moment of feeling like, 'What's the point? Why am I even here?' " Glover told PEOPLE exclusively Wednesday. "I just wanted to write down my feelings. I definitely was just expressing myself."
However Glover, 30, says he has been feeling down of late – though he shies away from describing his current state as depressed.
"If I'm depressed, everybody's depressed," he says. "I don't think those feelings are that different from what everybody's feeling. Most people just don't tell everybody."
"I was just tired of telling people I was tired. It felt like every day someone would ask, 'What's wrong. Are you OK?' " says Glover. "And I would say, 'I'm tired, I'm tired.' I didn't want to do that anymore. I guess sometimes not telling the truth is just as bad as telling a lie."
Though the actor declined to elaborate on comments that he had been sick this past year, or that he did not in fact leave Community
to be a rapper, he says he's happy he vented.
"I'm glad people saw it. I feel like I got some stuff out there," he says. "I got it off my chest. It felt like I had been holding on to something."
