In honor of Veterans Day, Good Morning America helped USO Coast Guardsman of the Year, Sam Peikert, pull off a big surprise for his girlfriend – an on-air marriage proposal featuring Jason Derulo singing "Marry Me."

"I'm still in shock, definitely," says Jackie Fairchild on GMA Live!, after having gladly agreed to marry Peikert.

"They came to me, they started putting a mike on, and my makeup, and I didn't think I was going to be on TV. I was adamant on not being [on TV], and then, when I got into the green room, they just pushed me out there," Fairchild explains.

"I was very nervous," Peikert says. "She doesn't like to be in front of a lot of people, in front of America."

Peikert was named USO Coast Guardsman of the Year in October for helping to save a father and son who were swept over a 20-foot dam on the San Marcos River in Texas.

Derulo serenaded the couple with his song "Marry Me," a performance that also launched the USO project Every Moment Counts, which aims to help service members abroad to stay connected to their families.

"A lot of these amazing guys like this miss out on these moments," Derulo says. "You hear stories of fathers watching their babies being born and not being there for nine months, so we're trying to make every moment count."
