Jennifer Lawrence actively fought to keep Katniss Everdeen from looking too thin in The Hunger Games movies, because she knew the character would be a hero for young girls.

"When we were doing the first The Hunger Games, it was a big discussion, 'cause it's called The Hunger Games – she's from District 12, she's obviously underfed, so she would be incredibly thin. But, I just kept saying, 'We have the ability to control this image that young girls are going to be seeing,' " she says in an interview with the BBC.

"Girls see enough of this body that we can't imitate, that we'll never be able to obtain, these unrealistic expectations, and this is gonna be their hero, and we have control over that," she explains.

Lawrence admits that she has refused to lose weight for a role in the past. "It's better to look strong and healthy," she asserts.

When asked about the sexualization of young women in the entertainment industry, Lawrence acknowledges that it's a problem.

"Sex sells, and for some disgusting reason, young sex sells even more," she says.

But when asked if she condemns Miley Cyrus for "twerking with a dwarf", Lawrence stops short of denouncing her, and instead chalks it up to individual expression.

"Everybody's got their own path and they have their own way of finding themselves. And for some people that's how they feel best, that's how they feel sexy, that's how they want to perform," she says. "I'm just saying, to each their own. "
