The actor, 53, was last seen on July 10 at London's Royal Court theater, where he was rehearsing for a play called Talk Show. His body was discovered at Splash Point cliffs in East Sussex on July 12, but authorities did not confirm that it was Bhattacharjee until nearly a week later.
Until his body was discovered and identified, Bhattacharjee's friends and family – including Kim Cattrall, Stephen Fry and Parminder Nagra from ER – were unsure as to the cause of his disappearance and Tweeted messages in hopes of his safe return.
His 24-year-old-son, Rahul Bhattacharjee-Prashar said at the time it was "completely out of character" for him to go missing and that his father "was doing well in his career and everything seemed to be going okay."
But Bhattacharjee's girlfriend, Emma McKie, now says his financial problems weighed on him and that the news of his suicide did not come as a surprise to her.
"I [did] believe that Paul would take his own life," she told The Telegraph. "He had a darkness inside him that was irreparable."
