Her Pick: Smitten Kitchen by Deb Perelman
I'm cruising through my many cookbooks to get new ideas (my daughters have already insisted I make Silver Palate's pecan pie, which I do every year). I know the homey, unfancy Smitten Kitchen's kale salad will appear – black kale with cranberries, pecans, radishes and goat cheese, fantastic and a nice counter-balance to all that turkey and stuffing. Author Deb Perelman's breads and sweets all look pretty great, too.

Her Pick: Keepers by Kathy Brennan & Caroline Campion
Don't think I can face another year of boring old green beans, so I've been flipping through Brennan and Campion's great new not-too-fussy Keepers for out-of-the-box options. Tomato and Zucchini Gratin looks yummy, or – ooh! – Roasted Acorn Squash with Jalapeño-Lime Butter ... I might just have to try both.

Her Pick: Thanksgiving: How to Cook It Well by Sam Sifton
Just a year after its publication, Sam Sifton's Thanksgiving already feels like a go-to classic. It's perfect for basics like turkey stock, and for thinking about the whole of planning and cooking, including clean-up and leftovers. Also, he and I subscribe to the same "there will be butter" philosophy.
