For the last few years, PEOPLE has gotten an influential DJ
to share an exclusive preview of the songs they plan to spin for a crowd on New Year's Eve.
To ring in 2014, L.A.-based DJ/producer Goldroom
(aka Josh Legg), 30 – who has remixed songs for many artists, including Charli XCX, Atlas Genius, Niki & the Dove and Gigamesh – has provided a sneak peek of 10 sexy songs he'll be playing for the crowd at the W Hollywood on Tuesday night
"For me, the music that gets me moving is the type of stuff that grabs your heartstrings first," Legg, whose song "Embrace" was featured on PEOPLE's list of amazing songs you may have missed in 2013
"Melody and groove do a lot more for me than big beats and clichés. Even deejaying on New Year's Eve, my goal is to tell a story that lasts two hours. We all start out together at the bottom of the mountain and climb it together. I feel like when you reach the top it's a lot more fun when you take your time, especially when champagne is involved."
The Boston-bred artist, who has become a favorite among fans of nu-disco music, began writing his own music from the young age of 10. What started out as guitar-based music changed in 2006, when he "started to experiment with electronic sounds, which led me down the path towards Goldroom," he says.
"For me, my musical influences have always lain with songwriters, not producers or DJs," Legg explains. "There's something very sacred to me about the process of songwriting and the beauty and excitement of a song coming together. The best songs can work in any genre, so to me it's the skeleton that all of music is built on. It's artists like Tom Petty, Prince or Bill Withers that really continue to inspire me to this day."
