Shia LaBeouf, currently embroiled in a plagiarism scandal, claims he is saying goodbye to the limelight.
"In light of the recent attacks on my artistic integrity, I am retiring from all public life," the actor, 27, Tweeted Friday.
He soon added, "My love goes out to those who have supported me."
LaBeouf has drawn scorn for allegedly plagiarizing content from cartoonist and graphic novelist Daniel Clowes for a short film he made, and then rolling up his sleeves in preparation for what has been perceived as battle.
Besides Tweeting apologies to Clowes in messages many have found heavily tinged with sarcasm, the Transformers star also hired a skywriter to deliver the words "I Am Sorry Daniel Clowes" over Los Angeles.
He then went on to Tweet the cease-and-desist letters he received from Clowes's attorney, along with a storyboard take on another story by Clowes.
In recent years, LaBeouf has raised eyebrows with incidents of unusual behavior. Last year, he made headlines – and was the butt of one of Neil Patrick Harris's jokes at the Tony Awards – when he dropped out of a Broadway show in which he was costarring with Alec Baldwin. "Creative differences" were cited.
There have also been past reports of the extreme lengths to which he would go to deliver his movie roles, while more recently the U.K.'s Mail on Sunday reported that he failed to bathe during the filming of Fury – alienating his costar, Brad Pitt.
Still, at least one former costar has come to his defense, saying all this is simply LaBeouf flexing his creative muscles.
"He’s always just honored his artistic instincts, even when he was 12 years old to about 15 or 16 as we worked together," LaBeouf's former Even Stevens TV costar, Christy Carlson Romano, told Entertainment Weekly.
She added: "This is not just some breakdown, like some other child actors. This isn't some emotional neediness. This is something that he's actively doing."
