Benedict Cumberbatch proves there's an upside to accepting an award via satellite – wearing what you want from the waist down!

The British actor, 37, won the U.K. National Television Award for best TV detective for his portrayal of a brilliant and lovably-sociopathic Sherlock Holmes in the hit BBC television series Sherlock on Thursday, but accepted his award from Los Angeles.

"Hello from LA … I'm over the moon. I can't tell you what this means," he said. "This is a vote by the public and you are the people that have made this the success of what it is. It's a real, real, real thrill and I wish I was there to pick up the award in person."

But Cumberbatch's acceptance speech went from customary to quirky when the camera panned down to reveal bright orange swim trunks where the rest of his pant suit was expected to be.

He seems to have quickly assimilated to California culture. Watch below.

Sherlock is in its third season and can be seen on PBS Sundays at 9:58 p.m. ET.
