Saturday Night Live's freshest new face was just named Weekend Update's new co-anchor, joining Cecily Strong, beginning March 4. But he's actually been roaming the halls of the fabled comedy show for almost a decade. He hasn't had much screen time on the show, but that's about to change in a big way. And he has a famous girlfriend, so he's already playing the part.
Below, check out five things you should know about the impressively coiffed comic.
1. He's dating Rashida Jones
Let's get this one out of the way first. Sorry, ladies, Jost is spoken for – by Rashida Jones, the Parks and Recreation actress and, like Jost, a Harvard alum. They reportedly met last summer at the wedding of outgoing Weekend Update host Seth Meyers. And Jones has said she's picky, so he must be a good catch.
2. He's a seasoned performer, just not on SNL
The Staten Island native, who's been writing for SNL since 2005 and became its co-head writer in 2012, has only appeared in a couple of sketches on air. But he's done plenty of stand-up comedy around the country, including this amusing performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
3. He and Conan O'Brien have had the same job
Both served as president of the student humor magazine The Harvard Lampoon – O'Brien back in the early '80s, Jost in the early 2000s. "There have been a lot of alumni from that magazine that are involved with television," Jost once told AWE magazine. "Conan O'Brien is probably the most notable, but a lot of writers for The Simpsons, SNL and other shows have worked at the Lampoon. While I was there I thought it would be fun to try and write comedy as a job."
4. He's got a recipe for the perfect joke
As he told The New York Times Magazine: One tbsp. current events; ½ cup structure; 8 oz. white-guy dancing; ½ tbsp. freshly ground Bieber paternity test; Osama bin Laden to taste; garnish with "This guy knows what I'm talkin' about!"
5. He's not Seth Meyers
Meyers, of course, is leaving SNL to become the new host of Late Night, as Jimmy Fallon takes over The Tonight Show. For Jost, the Weekend Update chair is a big one to fill. How will he do? Let us know what you think below.
