Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman in the title role, has officially been chosen to open the 2014 Cannes Film Festival on May 14, fest organizers announced in Paris on Friday.

Directed by Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose), the film costars Tim Roth as Prince Rainier, and features Parker Posey, Paz Vega and Frank Langella.

Originally to have been released by the Weinstein Company in America on Nov. 27, 2013, the film has also been yanked from its March 14, 2014, release date amid reports that it wasn't finished – though Dahan has disputed that claim in the French press.

The film focuses on Kelly in the early 1960s when she is already established as the Princess of Monaco after marrying Rainer in 1956. Monaco is at odds with France, who has given the picturesque principality six months to reform its tax laws, and its citizens are looking to their princess for guidance.

Initially the project received cooperation from Grace's children Prince Albert and Princesses Caroline and Stephanie, but they have subsequently withdrawn their support and have even denounced the film.

No stranger to Cannes, Kidman served as a member of the jury last year.
