Wisconsin investigators are celebrating a happy ending after a baby reported missing after being snatched from a crib Thursday morning was found alive, left inside a tote bag near an Iowa gas station.

The 6-day-old infant, Kayden Powell, was found at about 10:15 a.m. Friday near a gas station on I-80 in West Branch, Iowa. The newborn had been swaddled in blankets inside a tote bag that was left outside in freezing temperatures, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports, noting an investigation into the abduction is continuing.

"We're all very fortunate this baby is alive," G.B. Jones, an acting special agent in charge of the FBI's Milwaukee office, said at a morning news conference.

Federal authorities had joined a team of about 40 state and local law enforcement officers in the search after the infant's mother, Brianna Marshall, 18, made a frightened 911 call to police at around 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning saying her newborn, who'd been sleeping in a bassinet next to his parents, was gone, the New York Daily News reports.

Marshall and the boy's father, Bruce Powell, 23, were staying at a home in the Town of Beloit, about 50 miles south of Madison, Wisc., according to police.

Among those also staying in the home was Kristen Smith, a half-sister to the baby's mother. She left around 1:30 a.m. Thursday and was later stopped by police at a gas station in Iowa as she drove to her home in Denver. They searched her vehicle but turned up no baby or evidence. Smith was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant from Texas, but was not considered a person of interest, the Daily News reported.

Police have named no suspects and made no arrests.
